In the novel Old School by Tobias Wolff, one of the characters employs an interesting technique for learning how to write like a master novelist. He types out copies of great novels, word for word, to see what it feels like to write one.
It’s kind of like how students used to learn to paint by copying the Old Masters and apprenticing in their studios. I haven’t tried it yet, but there is a meditative quality about the activity that I might like.
